Traveling can be exciting and overwhelming at the same time… From packing your luggage, and navigating unfamiliar destinations to getting all the required documents. It shouldn’t be a kick from UFC’s Israel Adesanya. but sometimes it feels like that.

Savvy travelers have figured out these moves from years of experience on how to make their travel easy, comfortable, and enjoyable. Some of the moves – the best travel tips and tricks that promise to help travelers avoid painful kicks and prepare them for a wonderful, comfortable, and smooth travel are contained here.

So whether you’re a seasoned traveler or one that is just starting, these tips and tricks (sourced from real people) will surely make a difference in your travel experience. Please note that what worked for one may not work for the next person. They are not the only tips available- We encourage you to share any travel tips that you may have so others can learn and benefit from them.

Travel Tips and Tricks- the best moves

Research the country or city you’re visiting.

Call me curious but all my life I have always shown an interest in learning about different countries.  It doesn’t hurt to learn more about the country or city you intend to visit. Put Google to work or ask a friend. Adding some useful information about the country, city, or place you want to visit in your travel arsenal will make a difference. It’s said that the uninformed is deformed. Broaden your horizon by becoming informed about your destination.

Travel Advisories

While flipping through your geography handbook and maps, be sure to check the travel advisories for your intended destination. This information provided by the US Dept of State is often neglected. Some consider it misleading, but they are not. Some places are unsafe, especially for foreigners. Granted that people live in those areas, remember that you are not one of them.  Don’t end up as a bargaining chip between two unfriendly countries.

Pricey Gadgets and Valuables

Most people have lost their valuable and pricey belongings due to theft. But do know you can make those expensive and pricey gear look cheap and broken by using duct tape to cover some parts? I call it, ‘Deceptology‘. Nobody steals a broken device.

Another ‘Deceptology’ idea is to pack valuables in a diaper bag. Not because they’re cheap and waterproof, but because ‘nobody steals a diaper bag’. Brilliant!  So next time you see me at the airport, with a Diaper bag comfortably strapped behind my back, know that I’m up to something.

Check your passport.

This travel tip while being the most important part of your travel, is often overlooked.  Check the expiration date of your passport. Imagine arriving at the departure hall with your bags and ready to go only to realize that your passport has expired or is about to…ugh.  Most countries require that you have at least 6 months of life remaining on your passport.

Book Flights/Accommodation in Advance.

Myth or Fact– Last-minute booking can result in lower prices.  It depends and should not be a standard. There are times you get last-minute deals, especially with short-term vacation rentals trying to fill ‘orphan days’, but this is not always the case. Last-minute bookings most often result in higher prices, especially during peak travel seasons when demand is high. The best time to book a flight or accommodation is generally considered to be about six to eight weeks in advance,

Therefore, search, and compare flight tickets and accommodation early.  Book early to save money, but remember to check cancellation policies in case you need to cancel early if the plan changes to avoid losing your money. Waiting until the last minute to book costs more.

Affordable Travel Options= Deals

This is something to bear in mind- flight ticket starts to increase as your travel date comes closer. So, frequently searching and comparing costs is a sure way to find affordable options/deals on flights and hotels.  Sign up for price alerts, coupons, loyalty programs, and if possible, use credit cards that offer cash back. Don’t worry about your emails getting flooded- create a new account for this mission.

Passport Holder, Money Belt, or Hidden Pouch

How can I avoid pickpockets and other travel scams? This may not seem important to some but having your passport secured, handy, and easily accessible makes a whole lot of difference. It helps to keep all your important travel documents safe, secure and within reach resulting in less shuffling around- especially if you’re in a hurry to check in.

Also, a travel money belt or hidden pouch keeps your valuables safe and secure while you’re exploring.

In a situation where you lose your passport or important documents while traveling, contacting your country’s home office, embassy or consulate will be your first option. Ensure you know where they are located and save their number and address.

Get a Visa.

Most countries require visitors to obtain a visa. Citizens of certain countries can travel to some countries visa-free but that is not always the case because a travel visa is a mandatory document for international travelers in other to be granted entry into their destination.

To find out if you need a visa or not, click here or you can contact the embassy of the country you plan to visit. This will make your trip easy.

Book accommodation at a good location:

Nobody wants to stay in an unsafe neighborhood.  Lodging in a good location will keep you safe, and save you time and money on transportation. It also makes it easier to explore your destination because you feel safe.

Traveling with Disabilities

If travel is a hassle for those with no disability, then imagine what it is like for people with disabilities, the elderly, and people traveling with kids. Notify the airline or hotel ahead of time (while booking flight tickets or making hotel reservations) of your disability so they can make adequate provisions to accommodate your disability. Don’t just wait until you arrive at the airport to make that disclosure. Do the same if traveling with emotional support dogs and make sure you have the proper documentation.

Obey the laws.

This shouldn’t be a graduate course at Harvard but it’s important to mention it more often. People get into trouble in foreign lands because they don’t obey the laws of their host country. Simply because something is legal in your country doesn’t mean it’s legal elsewhere. Understanding and respecting local customs, traditions, and laws can help you avoid offending anyone, and getting into trouble. Remember the goal of your travel doesn’t include going to jail overseas or in another city.

Learn a word or 2 of the language.

I love it when I can say a word or two in the local language. A simple “Thank you” or “How are you”, can make a difference. Learning how to say some basic phrases in the local language not only helps you communicate with locals, make new friends, and have a more enjoyable trip but also pleases the hearts of the locals. Just make sure whoever you’re learning from isn’t teaching you the bad words that would get you into trouble. Learn a few words.

Learn the local culture and customs.

This travel tip is like the one mentioned above. It just doesn’t hurt to know a little bit about the local culture and customs as this can help you have a more respectful and enjoyable trip. What other way to learn about the culture or find local experiences when traveling than staying in their neighborhood? This will give you a more authentic and immersive travel experience. Learned that it’s offensive to wear shoes inside a house in Sweden. I need to find out more!

SIM Card and Unlocked Phone

How can I stay connected while traveling abroad? Why roam in a foreign country when you can easily get a sim card, pop it into an unlocked phone, and stay connected while traveling abroad?  If you don’t want to buy an unlocked phone, make sure that the phone that you’re currently using is unlocked. This will allow you to swap SIM cards and get you talking in minutes. There are some cheap unlocked phones you can buy online if yours isn’t unlocked. Alternatively, you can call your cell phone carrier and find out whether your phone is unlocked and if not, ask them to unlock it.

Download WhatsApp

Someone asked me what is the best travel app for communicating and I told him, ‘WhatsApp’. He looked at me like I was speaking gibberish. There are so many useful apps for travel and none can be described as the ‘best travel app’., but the one that I admire most is WhatsApp! It’s surprising what this app can do but not everyone is familiar with it, especially in the US. This app (business and personal) is popular in other countries and can be used to make free video and voice calls, instant messaging, pictures, videos, document sharing, etc. You’d be surprised to hear locals tell you to send them a message via WhatsApp.

With a Wi-Fi connection and WhatsApp, you may not even need a SIM card and an unlocked phone. The only limitation is that whoever you want to communicate with via WhatsApp must have the app installed on their cell phones.

Translation App.

Another app worth considering is the translation app. Use this app when traveling to countries where you don’t speak the language in case it’s difficult to speak some nice words in the local language. A good translation app can help you communicate with locals and avoid any misunderstandings. If you can’t get an app, some gadgets offer similar services.

Free Wi-Fi

Free Wi-Fi can be risky and a lifesaver, especially when you need to stay connected or make last-minute reservations. I mentioned earlier that you can make calls with WhatsApp with Wi-Fi. But that’s not everything a free Wi-Fi can do for you, it saves money. ensures you are connected especially if working remotely.

Know when to Quit.

This tip may sound unnecessary, but the truth is that most people don’t know when to stop drinking. I have seen tourists go above and beyond forgetting that they are exposing themselves to risks. Being in unfamiliar territory should be a warning sign that you need to control your urge to drink excessively. Learn when you’ve had a little too much and respectfully return to your hotel room.

Communicate

How can I stay safe while traveling alone? This tip may not apply to those who believe that the government is tracking their every move. You might say, “It’s nobody’s business to know my business”, or  ‘I don’t want anybody getting into my business”. We understand that you’re a grown adult but not when you’re in a foreign land and unfamiliar territory. Let friends and family members know where you are, your next destination, the people you’re with, your tour guide’s name, and if possible, his or her phone number. It’s a good idea to let someone else know your travel itinerary. Just in case.

If you’re traveling in a group, maintain a “herd community”. Form a bond and always look out for each other.

Resist the Urge to Share Pictures on Social Media.

This travel tip was added to ensure you are aware of your vulnerability and the risks you will expose yourself to when you share those photos. It’s tempting to share those beautiful photos and videos of you being kicked by a Camel. But tell the devil, “Get thee behind me’, and resist the urge to post those photos on social media while you’re out of town.  Sharing your vacation videos and photos while you’re still away tells the world that you are thousands of miles away and won’t be home anytime soon. Watch ‘Home Alone’. This movie was made before the advent of social media. The bad guys were checking out homes whose owners had gone on vacation. It still happens now.

Therefore, wait until you return to let the world know you ate breakfast in Phuket, lunch in Nairobi, and dinner with the Queen on the same day.

Be Nice

Being nice to people is a good way of life. But in this case, be nice to the hotel staff especially if you’re lodging in a small hotel. Being nice, respectful, and polite to the staff also involves speaking a few of the local languages. Locals tend to be warm to travelers who at least try to speak their language. “Bonjour mademoiselle”, “Je m’appelle”– I found myself introducing myself in French. One good turn deserves another- the attendant may give you useful information that will help you.

Try the local cuisine.

How can I find the best local food when traveling? It’s always good to try the local cuisine of your host community and you can find them by asking the hotel staff, taxi driver, or the locals. While it’s a good way to experience the local culture and get a taste of the local flavor, try not to eat what you don’t know or comfortable eating. You’re not one of those travel chefs who go about eating ‘weird’ food. They have good insurance and not traveling alone. They can pause filming when they get sick, but you can’t.

Photocopy important documents.

Having copies of your passport, visa, and other important documents can provide peace of mind in case the originals are lost or stolen. This is like not putting your eggs in one basket.

Think of this one as a security measure. In case of emergencies, make two copies of your passport, credit card, and other travel documents. Leave one copy with a friend or relative at home and bring the other copy with you. Some travel sites even recommend taking photos of these documents and storing them in the cloud (Google Drive is free) so you can access them if your belongings are stolen.

Don’t take all your credit cards. You might as well take one with you and keep the rest at home. Notify your bank that you’ll be traveling abroad to avoid transactions from being denied.

Travel Insurance.

Travel insurance provides added peace of mind and financial protection in case of any unexpected events such as flight and accommodation cancellations, illnesses, or accidents.

Extra Underwear

How nice can it be to fresh? Keep that underwear in your carry-on luggage. The checked-in bag might be delayed or even get stolen but you have some fresh and clean undies to ride with. Also, keep some change of clothes in hand luggage.

Pack a comfortable pair of shoes.

What should I pack for a long trip? Many people don’t know what to pack or the best travel accessories to make trips easier. There’s no standard list of the best travel accessories that every traveler must have. It all depends on the individuals and the nature of their trip. However, since you’ll be doing a lot of walking, a pair of shoes that are both comfortable and suitable for the destination will be necessary. Keep it simple. It’s easier to go through TSA checkpoints with a slip-on than with boots and stilettos.

Pack a multi-plug or universal travel adapter.

People can argue that a multi-plug or universal travel adapter is the best travel accessory. That may be a valid argument to make because a multi-plug adapter can help you charge all your electronic devices in different countries and ensure that you’re always powered and connected. It will also interest you to know that Europe and other parts of the world have different voltage and their sockets and plugs are different from that of the United States. Adding a universal adapter and possibly a step-down transformer that will convert 220 volts to 110 in your collection of devices is a smart idea. There are inexpensive and good multi-plug or universal travel adapters with USB ports you can purchase online or at the local stores.

Power Bank

This device is the most undermined yet important electronic device that everyone must own.  I wouldn’t say it’s the best travel accessory but you need this if you want your electronic devices to be powered on at all times. You cannot bet there’s always going to be electricity to charge those portable devices that we carry everywhere. I don’t want to assume that the worst travel mistake anyone can make while out and about is running out of juice on your phone but it happens. So pack a portable charger to keep your electronics charged.

Why do I need a Power Bank?

You are not under any obligation to have one nor an act of Congress that everyone must have a power bank. But you will understand its importance when your phone is dead, and you can’t take that picture. The closest to best explanation I have given to those who ask me this question is to read the Bible story of the foolish virgins- Matthew 25. They waited for the bridegroom’s arrival but when it was time, they ran out of oil. Those who had extra oil were able to meet with the bridegroom.

You need a portable charger or power bank to avoid becoming one of the foolish virgins who ran out of oil by the time the main event they’ve been waiting for started. And yes- TSA allows a power bank on the plane. Don’t just load up on power banks enough to power an Island and expect TSA to allow your board.

There are so many inexpensive and cheap power banks you can get from Amazon or elsewhere without breaking the bank.

Use Public Transportation.

Not everyone likes using public transportation, but it is often the best, most affordable, and most convenient way to get around.  While planning your itinerary, be sure to know the train and bus routes, departure, and arrival times. But if you can’t use public transportation, use the services of rideshare and enjoy being driven around. At least you can worry less about driving in traffic or getting lost.

Tip for Services

Be a good tipper because God loves a cheerful tipper. Yes, he does. I told someone this verse and he looked at me like I’m a crazy person. I have tipped my way out of difficult situations and gained a lot of assistance by being a cheerful tipper.

Nationality

Try not to expose your nationality. Most Americans think it’s cool to walk around in France wearing shorts and white socks. This may be cool in the States but looks weird and odd elsewhere.  There goes an American. Also, asking for a refill at McDonald’s when abroad reveals you’re an American. For example, a small cup in the US is large in Europe. This gave me out during a trip to Istanbul- the moment I asked for a refill at McDonald’s instantly informed them that I came from the US. ‘That’s how we know people visiting from ‘America”.

Take a picture with your tour guide.

Most people don’t do this, but I make sure that I take a picture with my tour guide and send it to my family member or friend back home. It provides some sort of lead. In case something unusual happens, there will be someone who can be asked to provide some explanation. My tour guide took a selfie of us. Then I got his number and sent him the picture. Now I have his number, name, and face. I immediately shared the same pics with my friends and family members and backed them up in the cloud. Mission accomplished! I kept taking his pics periodically. Reason: “In case I go missing, look for this guy. He might have some info”.

Listen to the news.

A friend got stuck in the Philippines because he didn’t know that countries were shutting down their borders following the COVID-19 outbreak. Periodically watch the news, especially local news to know what’s happening around you. Also, keep track of home news.

Know the currency and exchange rate.

What should I know about currency exchange when traveling? Many people suggest using the ATM because it’s convenient and secure. But you will lose some money when you withdraw money from an ATM abroad because it would be exchanged/converted to the local currency. Download the Foreign Exchange App to learn about the local currency and exchange rate. This will help you budget and manage your finances while traveling.

Pack a Small Backpack.

A small backpack can be a great way to carry essentials like electronic devices, hygiene products, snacks, and any purchases you make while exploring. Having a backpack with a built-in USB charging port (that offers the ability to charge your device with a power bank while on the go) and filled with essentials will make a big difference especially if your flight is delayed or canceled, and you are stuck in the airport.

Help those with children.

It’s always good to help women traveling with children and the elderly. It’s said that one good turn deserves another. While you’re helping from the abundance of your heart, you might just get rewarded. For instance, I helped a lady with her baby throughout a trip- not expecting anything in return but got priority boarding which helped me to avoid the boarding commotion.

Pack smart and light, not heavy

While I love traveling light and understand that overpacking can be a real drag, I find that traveling with a neck pillow, earplugs, and an eye mask can make a difference. So, try to pack only what you need and avoid bringing heavy, bulky, or unnecessary items. Besides, it can be costly to pay for extra luggage.

Layer up

I get cold easily and don’t like those airline blankets. It can get extremely cold inside the plane or at your destination. For example, I was unprepared when I visited Istanbul. Just as we were descending, I looked out through the window and saw that it was snowing. Yours sincerely wasn’t prepped for that weather. Even though I took care of the situation by buying a jacket and some sweaters, the experience of being exposed to extreme cold wasn’t pleasant. Therefore, layer up for the flight and the city by packing a jacket or sweater to stay comfortable in air-conditioned places, or in case of sudden weather changes. We call it bipolar weather.

Use a filtered water bottle.

For the environmentally conscious and green earth advocates, use a reusable water bottle. Besides keeping you hydrated (which helps you avoid jet lag when traveling to a different time zone), it saves you money and ensures that you are drinking clean and safe water (especially in places with poor water quality). It reduces waste and saves the environment. There are so many inexpensive and good water bottles online and in stores to get.

Local markets

Have you been asked to bring back a souvenir? Local markets can be a great way to shop for souvenirs, try local food, and experience the local culture. Souvenirs are cheaper in local markets than in brick-and-mortar shops. You will have a different experience when you visit a local market.

Inventory Management

Inventory management will play a significant role in your travel. You will be wondering why you need to have an inventory- well the inventory constitutes what you need to take with you for the trip. The sooner you start listing and gathering the things you will need – travel documents, visa, clothing, shoes, power bank, credit card, etc., the better. Make a list of these important things so you don’t miss a thing.

Cost

Do you have an idea of how much your trip will cost? Have you sat down to calculate the cost? Many fail to do this. Understandably, you may end up spending more than you budgeted, but it doesn’t hurt to have a budget. For this reason, it’s the best thing to create your travel-to-do-list because it gives you an idea of how much that trip will cost,
